WG 3: High resolution 3D atmospheric measurements by UAS
Main focus of this WG will be the application of UAS in order to produce detailed and accurate 3D atmospheric data sets related to different specific research requirements. This task will include the exploitation of novel flight strategies together with associated data analysis tools in order to maximise the resources available. In particular the use of co-operative UAS, such as in swarms and flocks, can provide the best resolution of atmospheric measurements in limited time. Whilst closely connected to WG1 and WG2 the work of this WG3 will focus on the application of UAS and the related requirements concerning mission planning and flight strategies to optimise sensing.
Part of this work will take place in close cooperation with the community of numerical atmospheric modelling (fine-scale and large eddy simulations (LES)). On the one hand model results will be used for the planning of flight patterns and flight strategies. On the other hand the measurements will be crucial for model validation purposes and for the planning and setup of future numerical simulations.
